Abstract

Set during the colonial era, Six Acres and a Third by Fakir Mohan Senapati presents a true picture of the life of Odia people under the British rule. The novel, originally written in Odia, aptly shows the condition of the local inhabitants of the region in the different strata of society. The poor are shown mostly oppressed, both by the foreign colonisers and the fellow Indian sub-colonisers. There are deep layers of politics behind every step of the socially privileged who never leave a chance to exploit their poor counterparts from the same society. The novel was written at a time when the Britishers had already had established their grasp over the Indian political and social spheres. Thus, there is to be seen the different colonial structure(s) of knowledge and power which are employed by the colonisers and the sub-colonisers to exploit the downtrodden sections of the then Odia society. The present research article attempts to point out some such instances from the novel and study and analyse them in relation to Fakir Mohan’s descriptions.
